Eric Tobin loves to paint outdoors. Direct from nature, where he can find the light, and see things painting in the studio just can't provide. "I enjoy painting in rural areas such as Cambridge and Johnson, VT, where I have lived most of my life," Eric says. "I try to capture the landscape as I see it, to get the feeling of the place, the way the light plays on different objects, the time of day and the season of the year. By painting directly outdoors, you see things that you would miss from a photograph. I particularly like painting in the winter, spring and fall."
"I am for the most part, a self-taught artist and have been interested in painting and drawing since childhood. Thomas Curtin, a landscape artist from Cambridge, VT, first influenced me. It was he who gave me my first paint set at about the age of twelve. As a young boy I remember standing beside Tom for hours watching him paint, I was very impressed with his artwork. I have always felt very fortunate to have known and painted with Tom Curtin."
Eric has shown his work in galleries throughout New England, and his work is part of corporate and private collections across the country and abroad. Locally, he is the recipient of numerous awards, including the "Best in Show" in1992 and 2000 at the Helen Day Art Center's annual "For Art Sake" show in Stowe, VT. He is currently a member of the Northern Vermont Artist Association and the Southern Vermont Art Center.
