"Saturday's Shadow"
watercolor, 14"x10", SOLD
"In considering a less obvious pedestrian view of the everyday presence of the Centre's iconic bell tower and sister buildings, I observed this dynamic composition while seated on a bench near the ice cream parlor, and through the narrow frame of storefront columns. The forced perspective along the façades provided a strong rectangular exposure of the planes of the tower and the building volumes. The sides of the building with their complimentary maroon and green colors, the facing shape of the sign, the converging underside of the projecting curved porch roof, contrasted with the negative space of the street, the park vista and the brilliant blue summer sky. The building's back-lit condition provided additional contrast for its brightly lit roof and covered porch, which played against the steep, fleeting shadow of the tower; and its diagonal axis was mirrored by the opposing diagonal of the flag. The festive signage flag was a framing counterpoint of curves and colors that contrasted with the many rectilinear elements of the building and suggested the busy activity of this center. The completed image became the symbol for a local gallery's specially themed show about the Centre."
