Born in Normandy in 1941, Parent was exposed to art and the sea from an early age. He is a graduate of Paris University and the Institute d'Etudes Politiques, having French Civil Service, stationed on Ile de la Reunion in the Indian Ocean. From 1969 to 1984 he was owner and manager of a mineral water company in France . Since then he has devoted all his time to painting, and sailing when the considerable demand for his works permits.
His art education probably started with looking over the shoulder of his mother, an art teacher, but he is essentially a self taught artist. Sailing and painting have been his passions for a long time. His art materials are always with him – he painted a watercolor of Cape Horn on location, while crewing aboard Kriter IX, the French entry in round the world races in 1981 nad 1982. He has participated in many offshore races between 1962 and 1980. He has sailed in eight Fastnet races.
Parent has sailed across the Atlantic seven times, twice in single-handed Trans-Atlantic Races from France to the Caribbean (in 1978 and 1982). After the 1982 race he sailed up the coast and fell in love with New England . Since then he returned to the East coast annually until 1993, he then established a home on the coast of Connecticut . He paints the coastal scenery from Maine to the Caribbean . (In the past he has painted and exhibited coastal scenes in France , England , Bermuda , St. Barth and in the Virgin Islands , in addition to the United States . There were also several one-man shows in France.)
Two books of his watercolors, both out of print, were published in Paris . He has also contributed to an instructional text compiled by Rachel Rubin Wolf and published by North Light Books, titled “Painting Ships, Shores and the Sea”. His work was also included in “A Gallery of Marine Art” published bay Rockport Publishers. More recently, one of his watercolors was selected for the cover of the Connecticut Boater's Guide 2002, published by the Connecticut D. E. P.
Currently his works are exhibited in galleries ranging from Maine to the Caribbean , including the prestigious Mystic Maritime Gallery at the Mystic Maritime Museum . He is frequently commissioned to paint portraits of yachts and of waterfront homes. Mr. Parent is an artist member of the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA) as well as of the Salmagundi Club, New York . He also conducts regular, well-attended, watercolor workshops, which he can conduct in French and in English.
